Reaching Orchid Beach is all part of the K’gari adventure. Access to the island is 4WD only, and you’ll need a QPWS vehicle permit before you travel. Permits and Mantaray Barge tickets can be purchased online or at the Caltex service station as you enter Rainbow Beach.
Most guests choose to travel via Inskip Point, where the Mantaray Barge runs frequent services to Hook Point. It’s the quickest and easiest route to the eastern beach. You can also arrive from the western side on the Sealink barge from River Heads (Hervey Bay).
From Hook Point, it’s around 105 km along 75 Mile Beach to Orchid Beach—usually 2–3 hours, depending on conditions. For the smoothest trip, aim to land about two hours before low tide. Beach conditions can change quickly, especially around Indian Head, Middle Rocks/Champagne Pools, and rocky sections like Poyungan Rocks and Happy Valley, so it’s worth checking the latest updates on the QPWS website or getting in touch with us before you set off.
Once you arrive, you’ll find Orchid Beach township safely enclosed by a wongari (dingo) fence. We encourage all guests to read the important wongari safety information on the QPWS site before their stay.
If you’d like to add a little adventure to your trip, you can fly in via private aircraft or Air Fraser. We’re happy to pick you up from the Orchid Beach airstrip—located beside the shop—and return you after your stay.
Overnight accommodation with a breakfast pack can be arranged.
The airstrip is 670m of grass over sand, unregulated, with three windsocks.
Landing fee is $30, payable at the shop. CCTV‑monitored short‑term parking is available.
Please note: there are no 4WD hire companies at Orchid Beach, but we’d be delighted to show you around our beautiful township.

It functions much like a local RSL or community hall and is the social heart of Orchid Beach. Cold drinks available at the bar, with casual food options. All run by community volunteers.
Open each second Friday for NRL action, and each weekend through NRL finals.
The Shed is a great way to meet locals, enjoy a community atmosphere, and take part in the unique culture of Orchid Beach. All welcome , licensing laws apply.
